There was a time when I thought that I couldn’t make my own DIY lotion recipe.
I think I was just intimidated. Too much time, too much to learn, too many ingredients…until I found the best recipe ever. And, my skin has been thanking me ever since. In fact, my Mom {who has always had amazing skin} said, “What have you done to your skin?! It looks incredible!” So, today, I’m sharing my favorite lotion recipe that is so easy to make, you may just make it right now…
My kids made this diy lotion with me.
The secret is whipping the coconut oil – have you tried it? I was a skeptic, but now, I’ll never look back. Whipped coconut makes it smooth and soft without the little lumps that can happen when you mix the coconut oil as a liquid and let it dry.
No more chunky coconut oil!
And, whipping the coconut oil with our hand blender was the BEST activity ever for my little ones.
When we were done, we added our free printable and it made for the perfect kid-made gift.
And, did I mention?
It smells heavenly…

How to Make DIY Lotion
Whip about 4 tablespoons of coconut oil. Remember, coconut oil can be hard (if it’s in the jar) or in a liquid state when heated up. You’ll want to whip the coconut oil when it is hard, not when it’s in a liquid state.
Use your hand mixer to whip the coconut oil until smooth. The coconut oil will keep a smooth texture from now on – woot!
Add the lavender oil and frankincense oil – I added more because I like the smell to be a bit stronger. Use your discretion.
Print your labels and add to the top of your jar!
Note: This amount of lotion will not fill the jar to the top. But, I find that this lotion lasts for so long, that I opt to make a smaller amount. Double the recipe to fill the jar!
When you whip it, it no longer melts?
No, it will still melt if you heat the oil after whipping, but it won’t return to a solid, hard state like it does in the jar. It becomes soft after whipping the coconut oil – you’ve got to try it!!
I will!!! I’ll have to try one of my new essential oils in there, too!!
Have you ever tried other essential oils besides lavender or frankincense? Coconut and lavender and vanilla strikes me as being a good combination….
I’ve never tried vanilla, but now you’ve got me curious! I love the frankincense because it’s extremely good for your skin (especially with aging) and I use lavender because of it’s ability to heal small cracks and blemishes. I think the vanilla would smell amazing though!
I tried whipping my coconut oil and it went to a thick paste help
Hi Karen, you can always try whipping for longer. If the hand mixer isn’t doing the job, you can throw it into a stand mixer or add some shea butter to it to make it really soft! The coconut oil will dry and shouldn’t feel “hard” like it does in the jar, but you should be able to scoop some out easily with your fingers. Good luck! 🙂
