We love chalk art.

The i Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival comes through our city in May.  The Santa Barbara mission hosts crowds of people each Spring to see the amazing chalk art that local artists create.  Last year, we loved seeing the artwork and we can’t wait to see them again this year.

We’ve done process art before, but we couldn’t wait to try street painting in our own back yard!

We received a Master of the Arts chalk set for free from Craft Project Ideas.  The amazing colors inspired my daughter and me to look at the photographs from the i Madonnari street festival, where artists create large-scale images using pastels on pavement.

We took our chalk and a few paintbrushes outside to create our own backyard street art.

Make your own chalk art for preschoolers

Setting Up Chalk Art for Kids

  1. Make a small square with painters tape
  2. Set out chalk or pastels
  3. Have a cup with water and paintbrushes to extend the activity

My daughter got right to work with her favorite colors.

Because the chalk comes in so many shades of color, she was able to use different hues of purples, blues, and greens which she loves.  After filling in her square, she “dusted” away the chalk with the paintbrushes.  Then, she used the paintbrushes with water to make shooting stars.

We worked on our own square together using colors like silver, gold, and shades of orange to make sunset colors.  We ended by painting a heart over our sunset with water and a brush.

The philosphy of the Master of the Arts from Craft Project Ideas is all about encouraging process art.  My daughter loved every moment of this and we revisited a little of our cities’ culture as well.  We can’t wait to go to the next i Madonnari Festival this May!!

If you loved this post, you might enjoy our process art for preschoolers.  And, don’t forget to come join the fun on our Facebook page and show us your backyard street paintings!
