How to Make a DIY Night Light for Kids

Uncategorized

My daughter has always loved having a night light.

She has struggled with falling asleep since she was a baby and once she hit toddlerhood, a night light became an essential part of her routine.  Since she often calls out for us (or used to when she was younger), I wanted to come up with a way for her to feel at ease when she fell asleep.  After staring at a Melissa and Doug toy container for a while, I had an idea to make a simple DIY night light for kids.

This project took me less than 15 minutes to put together and my kids loved it so much!  And, there’s a bonus: this night light is made from a Melissa and Doug wooden box. Do you know those wooden boxes that most of their toys come in?  I couldn’t believe how easily we made something new out of an old container!

Materials for Making a Photo Night Light

  • Photo printed on plain paper <–that’s important.  It allows more light to shine through than when printed on photo paper.
  • Melissa and Doug wooden box with clear lid.  We used the box that came with our magnetic alphabet and number set
  • Battery operated tea light

Photo night lightIf your box has a middle section, we tapped our piece out with a hammer.  If you don’t want to do that, you could put a tea light on either side of the divider, but it will make the night light brighter.  Tape your photo to the clear lid so the photo is facing out.  Turn on the tea light and place it inside of the container.  Shut the lid.

And, Voila – it’s that easy to make a photo night light!
