We’re a little obsessed with any ornament kids can make here at Happily Ever Mom.
Honestly, it’s because you can treasure kid-made ornaments for years to come (long after the kids have grown up and moved away, too {{sigh}}). My daughter and I loved working on these dragonfly ornaments and it was so simple and easy to make. And, dragonflies mean a lot in our family because I always think of my Grandparents when one flies by me. That’s why they are the perfect addition to our tree, but they make for a great gift kids can make, too!
You won’t need many supplies to make these adorable kid-made ornaments. I love that you can easily make these as a last minute gift!
Materials for Ornament Kids Can Make:
- Clothespin (We received ours free from Craft Project Ideas)
- Craft Sticks
- Wire
- Glue Gun
- Acrylic Paint (See those cute little paints – from Craft Project Ideas!!)
- Glitter (The fine glitter we used was received from Craft Project Ideas – aren’t the colors great?!)
- Modge Podge or clear glue
How to Make a Dragonfly Ornament Kids Can Make:
We started by painting the clothespins with various colors. My daughter loved choosing the ones that she liked as well as the ones she thought her Grandmothers would like.
If you don’t have modge podge on hand, you could add the glitter during this step. You just wouldn’t be able to use our rolling technique that we enjoyed to add the glitter! Then, we painted the craft sticks white – we did sprinkle white glitter on the craft sticks before they dried! You could always add modge podge later if you want the wings to have more glitter.
We let these dry on wax paper so that they did not dry to the paper towel. It worked nicely. Then, we added modge podge to our clothespins and rolled them in blue and red glitter (my daughter’s choice!).
Rolling the clothespins in glitter covered the entire pin nicely. But, be aware – you will be covered in glitter! The good news is that my daughter loved it and it easily washed away with soap!
I dabbed a little bit of hot glue in between the clothespin and slid the two craft stick wings into the clothespin opening. Then, I wrapped everything with jewelry wire in an “X” pattern to reinforce the ornament. We added some antennas by wrapping a small piece of jewelry wire around the neck of the clothespin and curled the ends upward.
I loved the result!
My daughter took so much time and care to make these and they are an amazing addition to our tree. Can’t you see the love she put into these? Priceless!

Pretty and sentimental what a nice combination. Looks fun to make!
Very cute (the craft & the crafter)! Love it! Shared & pinned 🙂
Oh I love how it turned out! Super cute! I know MB would love to make these! …and it’s just a pinch of glitter so it won’t send my glitter-phobia into high gear! 😉 Great job!
