10 Unexpected Discoveries While Parenting Little Kids

Between Parents & Kids

Have you made some unexpected discoveries while parenting little kids?

I’ve had many.  If you’re like me, than organization is not a strength.  I have to work hard to recognize when something is out of place. So, the occasional sock in the living room or pile of clean (or, let’s be honest, dirty) clothes in the middle of a bedroom has never impacted my daily business greatly.

But, things changed when I became a parent. With two wonderfully creative and active boys, “out-of-place” has been taken to a new level…

Those moments when you think, really kids? really?! This is so true!

Every day, the “treasures” I find around the house have gotten weirder, making the socks and piles of clean (dirty) laundry look like an intentional part of my décor.

Maybe my lack of organizational skills has been passed early (my kids are only three and one), but I would like to think that perhaps there are other parents out there experiencing similar “What the…?!” moments when they happen upon these discoveries left behind by their children.

Here are some of my favorites…

10 Unexpected Discoveries While Parenting Little Ones

The Runaway

It started with finding toys in my bag when out of the house without my children. In my case, it was almost always a piece of miniature construction equipment, which in our house has adopted the name “dumpy.” This was not terribly alarming.

The Crusty Runaway

Then, my eldest enjoyed playing with said miniature trucks in play dough. So, I often found “dumpies” encrusted with colorful doughs.  My bags didn’t like that as much…

The Stockpile

Of course, we have all found a Cheerio here or there in our car. When unearthing my son’s car seat to move to another vehicle, I found Cheerios, freeze-dried fruit, Goldfish, raisins, chunks of bread, and about a cup of sand. It left a trail as I moved the seat and deposited some of the goodies in my friend’s vehicle.

The Crumbs Look Good on You

After a very exciting week of “grocery shopping” at preschool, my son brought home bags of empty cartons of real food. One of said cartons was tucked inside their bath time pitcher, used for rinsing shampoo.

The Stab

I found a fork in my shoe. The hard way.

The TP Ninja

Toilet paper unrolled and pulled all the way to our living room and no kids in sight when I discovered it.

The Secret Stash

A used baby bottle in the toy chest.

The I Love Hygiene

Dental floss, partially unraveled, on back of the toilet seat.

The Smooch

A kiss, with pacifier still in his mouth, mostly consisting of pushing the pacifier against my cheek and making the kiss noise long after releasing, after my one year old woke up from a nap.

The Unexpected

And, the best discovery? Hearing a random, “Mommy, I love you,” from the back seat of the car from my three year old.

Moments that make you say, "What the...?!" while living with little ones - such a cute post!

What “discoveries” have you made?
