Tips for Taking Better Photos of Baby

Uncategorized

Join our AWESOME group of Moms on Facebook!

Today, I’m thrilled to share my tips for taking better photos of baby.

While I love dreaming up fun activities for babies, I love taking better photos of my babies even more.  Since I’ve joined up with the ultimate guide to baby milestones, I was inspired to share how to preserve baby’s first year through some easy photography tips.  Grab your camera {whatever you use} and get ready to start using these tips right now!

Better Photos of Baby

1.) Content and Contained

If you haven’t discovered window light, today is a great day to notice it!  Watch how light falls inside your home through the windows or sliding glass doors.  This is the perfect place to put subjects in when shooting indoors.  Since most baby cribs are next to, but not under a window, cribs offer a great space to take pictures of your baby.

  • Babies are contained in a crib so that you can actually get a picture of them {but, they should be happy! <–This won’t work for a baby who hates their crib}
  • Cribs are normally placed beside a window so you can use window light

2.)  From Above

While giant smiles are something that I love to photograph, think about shooting over your baby as they play.  Since they are smaller, you have enough space to shoot from above without having to stand on anything.  This is a great way to show baby playing and engaging with things that they love and can offer a different type of picture for baby books {it’s great to have diversity}.

3.) Walking Away

If you can, shoot pictures of baby as they walk away from you.  There’s no pressure to get a great smile, but you can often see what they are walking to in the shot and capture their toddling, too!

4.) Watching and Pointing

We often do this at the duck pond or at the zoo.  Find a gate that baby can watch something on the other side and capture photos while they are focused.  Use the gate as a leading line to make your pictures more interesting!

5.) In the bath

Use the bath tub as another way to keep babies “contained” while you can take some pictures.

Make sure they are safe, you can’t see it, but my husband was in the bath to keep my son safe.

If you’re using a DSLR, the white from the tub takes away any “orange glow” that you can get when shooting indoors.  In other words, the white tub lets your camera know what white looks like so the white balance in your photo looks natural <–don’t know what that means, you can read more about white balance tricks here!
