Kindergarten.
It’s one of those transitions in my daughter’s life that I’ve been thrilled about in one moment and terrified about the next. It’s a milestone that so many of us remember. And, for my little one, permanent memories are something that are very, very new. Up until now, my husband and I are the ones who have remembered every detail, every moment. But, now her life is reaching a whole new level of independence as she’s old enough to go off to Elementary school. But, it got me thinking about the best ways I could get my daughter excited about school before she even starts.
That’s why we were thrilled when Boxtops, a Happily Ever Mom sponsor, who encouraged us to share why we love Boxtops. Since we are new to the Elementary school scene, I wanted to share the easiest ways that our kids have gotten excited about school before they even start…
1.) Visit…a lot.
No, I don’t mean the classroom. I mean the playground. Local schools often keep gates open after hours and it makes the perfect trip to the “park” in the afternoon. Since we had a choice between two schools for my daughter, we visited both playgrounds so she was prepared for either.
Letting kids master some of the climbing structure is an easy way to get them a little more comfortable at recess time.
2.) Support Your School Early.
We love that our kids can get involved in supporting their school before they even start. By finding Boxtops throughout the grocery store, my kids are starting to learn how to support their school. We made it super fun for them to collect them, too. But, that’s for another post!
Psst…bonus box tops will earn even more money for your school! We found everything at Walmart for super low prices. Win/Win!
3.) Connect, connect, connect.
All summer long, we chatted it up with people at the park about which elementary school they attended. I often asked out of earshot of my daughter because I didn’t want to talk about Kindergarten too much, but once I knew that one of the kids at the park was attending one of the local elementary schools, I’d whisper in her ear, “That little girl is going to so-and-so school, too!”
It was a super simple way to start connecting with local neighbors and friendly faces that we might see at school.
4.) Go Team!
A simple way to support your school and get little ones excited is to buy a tee shirt or some paraphernalia from their school. They don’t need to wear it the first day or out and about (unless they want to!), but it’s a simple way to get excited about and to connect with their local school.
5.) Get Excited Yourself.
How’s this get my kids excited, you might ask? Months ago before my daughter started Kindergarten, I was a little anxious about her transition. My husband (very wisely I might add) looked at me and said, “she’s going to notice how you feel and how you talk about her new school, so start getting excited.” He was SO right! Our kids are emotional sponges and it’s so important that WE are excited about school if we want them to be excited too!
