Do you have a preschool girl in your house?
If you do, you might notice some changes coming your way (like it’s harder to get them to listen to you). I’ll save my top tip for handling preschoolers until the end, but for now, here’s what to expect from teenage, I mean, preschool girls.
25 Things You Need to Know About Preschool Girls
- They are fashion forward. It’s probably the last time they can get away with wearing animal print leggings, a tutu, and a mismatched tee-shirt while hearing, “Awwww, she’s so cute!”
- They think they’re in charge. Period.
- They suddenly walk around with their hand on their hip.
- They remind you a little bit of when you were a teenager……{Yikes}
- They smile and most people hand over whatever they want (this won’t be the last time either, just wait until their first boyfriend).
- They use words like, “cool, totally, like, awesome” and other popular slang.
- They click and group up with other girls (and, sometimes leave others out…).
- They sing at the top of their lungs even though their little voices crack {Let it go, let it go!}.
- They are noticing that girls rule and boys drool.
- They are starting to say, “Mooooommmmm” and “Daddddd” with attitude.
- They repeat everything you say: the good, the bad, and the inappropriate.
- They can burst into tears quickly followed with an eruption of laughter {Think Jekyll and Hyde}.
- They still get distracted by massive amounts of tickling.
- They truly believe that monsters live under their bed.
- They truly believe that they are a princess, a butterfly, a fairy, or another favorite character.
- They want to do everything by themselves even if they are completely incapable of doing so.
- They want to be another Mom in the house.
- They want to be consulted and have decisions run by them first, including where to go for ice cream.
- They want to sit in the front seat of the car even though they won’t be able to until they’re sixteen because of the newest height and weight requirements (exaggerating here, but it is insane!).
- They want to be around their friends every moment of the day.
- They want to PLAY all day long.
- They want YOU to PLAY with them all day long, too…
- They aren’t looking like your little baby anymore, but more like a kid.
- They can love science, math, engineering, trucks, blocks, and everything “boy” – encourage that love, too.
- They are a handful {in a good way}.
But, probably the most important thing to know about preschool girls is that they are little. They still fall apart because they don’t quite have the words to express themselves. They get frustrated because they want independence and they want to be cuddled up in your arms all at the same time. They cry and complain when you leave for work or run out on a errand. Even though they don’t quite look like it anymore, they’re still your baby.
And, they will grow up all too fast.
The great news about preschool girls is that handling their tantrums, their frustration, and their fears is more straight forward than it will be when they’re teenagers…
- Give them a hug and tell them that you love them.
- Listen to them.
- Take them out for one-on-one time.
- Plan a date at home.
- Tickle them.
- Remind yourself that they’re still little, even though they try to act SO grown up.
For your preschooler, having YOU is all they need to feel better even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes.
