Before I had kids, I didn’t think about making my own diy cleaners and sprays.
But, after years of using a particular cleaner that made me leave the room every time I sprayed it (it was so strong!!), I realized that the cleaners that I use in my home really matter. In fact, I realized that those cleaners are not just about getting my house clean, but also about keeping the air that I breath healthy too. So, when I finally was brave enough, I threw away my old make me feel woozy cleaners and did a little happy dance all the way to the garbage can. But, how do you make your own diy cleaners? Here are my top DIY cleaners you can make in a pinch…
1.) Natural Bleach/Mold Killer
Hydrogen peroxide is something that my Dad would pour over scrapes when I was a kid and I remember seeing all the bubbles form. My Dad told me that the reaction was the hydrogen peroxide killing bacteria. As it turns out, hydrogen peroxide is not very effective in helping small scrapes (sorry, Dad), but it is effective in killing mold. So, naturally, I was thrilled when I saw my own DIY bleach react by causing tons of bubbles when I sprayed it on mold ~ bye bye, bacteria!
What You Need:
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Glass Spray Bottle (I bought in bulk and shared with a friend ~ affiliate link)
- 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
Spray surface that needs a deep clean or mold removal. Let sit for 10 minutes and wipe.
2.) Household Cleaner
When I bough my essential oil kit just a few months back, I was thrilled to find out all the different ways that I could use my oils in cleaners. After falling in love with the kit, I also bought Thieves Cleaner which has become my favorite way to clean our dinner table and kitchen counters. Plus, it smells heavenly ~ no more cleaner that makes me woozy…
What You Need:
- Thieves Household Cleaner or thieves essential oil, water, and Dr. Bonner’s soap
- Glass Spray Bottle
- Water
- 1 tablespoon cleaner : 1 cup water is the right ratio in these glass spray bottles or 2 tablespoons cleaner : 1 cup water for a heavier cleaner.
3.) DIY Natural Air Freshener
While this may not be a cleaner per se, it’s still something that I spray liberally in my home…which effects the air that we all breathe. So, I’m adding this one to the list!
What You Need:
- Essential Oils – my favorite combination is 10 drops cinnamon bark, 20 drops lemon, and 20 drops orange. If you’ve grabbed this amazing deal with 11 essential oils, you can easily use thieves, purification (my fave smell!), tea tree oil (melacula), or lemon instead.
- Glass spray bottle
- Rubbing Alcohol or Vodka
- Water
Fill you spray bottle almost completely with water, add essential oils, and top it off with rubbing alcohol or vodka. Since water and oil don’t mix, the rubbing alcohol is the agent that helps the two mix. This way you have a solution instead of oil sitting on top of water.
4.) Dust Spray
Make your DIY dust spray with this yummy smelling essential oil. There’s an adorable label to print, too! via Pink When
5.) Bug Repellent
This is one of those sprays that I took for granted growing up. After waking up covered in bug bites because I slept outside in a hammock, I knew that I would forever adore bug spray. But, here’s an amazing DIY, all natural way to keep those bugs away! via Surviving the Stores

For the household cleaner, if you use the oil instead of the cleaner, how much essential oil do you add to the I Tbsp Dr. Bronner’s?
Katie Joiner says
Tristen, I’d do 10-15 drops 🙂

I agree with you that after having kids we have to be more concern what cleaners we are using. I also replaced the chemical products with natural cleaners. It takes very short time to prepare them and I am using them for longer time than the toxic products!
