Okay, it’s time to talk about this…
You know. What happens after the kids have gone to bed. There was a time when I thought that being a Mom was going to be easy. Maybe even boring and predictable ((shudder)). But, now that I know better, I’ve got to share what it’s *really* like when the kids go to bed. And, no, it’s not what I thought it was going to be…
Chores.
Now, I didn’t see this one coming. I thought I would be a morning chore kind of person, but I’m not. The dishes and laundry are best left to when the kids are asleep in my house. Need a little dusting? I’ll do it after they go to sleep. Need to wipe down the table? They’ll be in bed soon. Why work against the force that is my children? It will all get immediately dirty again if I clean while their awake anyway!
The secret stash of candy comes out.
Nope. The counters aren’t safe any more. You’ve got to put the good candy up high (really, really high) so that you’re toddler can’t climb up the pantry shelves to find it. Once they’re asleep (actually asleep and not pretending to be asleep when they come out of the room for the fifth time…), you can bust out the stash. We love Brookside chocolate for just this occasion. They’re delicious and an amazing dessert after a long day of wrangling little ones. In fact, my husband had never tried Brookside Chocolates before. He loved them so much that he brought all four flavors with us on vacation! obsessed? But, as a warning, don’t leave any traces of trash or dishes. Kids do not take it well when they figure out you’ve been eating chocolate while they sleep…

We Take Over the Couch.
It’s amazing how much space little bodies occupy. Somehow during the day, I barely get half a cushion to sit on the couch, let alone an entire seat. The second those kids are in bed, my husband and I take over. We stretch out our legs out, grab a pillow, and force our eyes to stay open for the next, oh-so important, step…
REAL television.
Now, I’ve got nothing against Charlie Brown or Mickey, but when the kids go to bed I am watching T.V. people. Suspenseful, scary, dramatic television. The kind of television that will give my children nightmares, but will keep my eyes from slowly closing because it’s just. that. good. I love real television because it’s finally a time in the day when I’m not doing all of the talking.
Insist on Quiet.
After the kids go to bed, I love the quiet so much that I “shh” my husband when he tries to talk to me (well…for a little while anyway ;)). I sit on the couch with my phone in my hand and I just keep scrolling. Who knows if I’m actually reading anything, but there’s no one asking to use my phone or turn on the iPad or hold this or hold that. My hands get to be holding the one thing I’m telling myself to put down all day while the rest of the room is… wait for it… QUIET!! (ah, it just feels so good to write that…)
