The truth is that wrestling changing a toddler’s diaper is one of those unexpected parenting hurtles.
There was a time when you could lay them on a changing table and everything was at your finger tips, the baby barely moved, and you just had to be careful for pee fountains or major blow outs. But, now they’re a toddler. And, instead, you have to worry about how to get their pants/shorts down long enough to even see the diaper let alone take it off and put on a new one. Who knew it was going to be so hard?
That’s why we’re thrilled to be partnering with Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers at Walmart.com because these diapers have gotten us through five years of diaper changes!
1.) The Distraction
The classic tactic of getting something that they love in their grasp to distract them long enough for the diaper change. But, man, that object better be good or they’ll be out of their mid diaper change…try making a small toy bucket with some of their favorite toys or books inside. Put it next to them while you change them so they can reach.
2.) The 2 Man Job
Not gonna lie, there are times when more than one person needs to be present for a diaper change. If you have someone near by who can help talk to your toddler and help grab wipes – take advantage of the help! My older daughter loves to help with this (sometimes!).
3.) The Stand Off
You know and they know that they need a diaper change…but, who will make the first move? Instead of chasing them down, let them know you’ll play chase right after their diaper is changed. Telling them “quick, let’s change your diaper so we can play chase!” It really works!
4.) The American Idol
Kids love singing, right?? Singing their favorite song is great, but putting on headphones to hear their favorite song works great too. If they don’t love the headphones, let them push a button to start their favorite book on tape or music – if they’re like my toddler, they’ll love to get to push
5.) The Upright
Your toddler can’t stay still so you think, “I know, I’ll change them standing up!” The trouble is…you thought it was pee in their diaper and then you pull back the diaper to reveal something much more exciting (how did you not smell that?!). But, changing a toddler standing up is the only way I can get my little one’s diaper changed. Be sure to check what’s inside before you take the diaper off, then get the diaper on any way that you can (it’s okay if it looks wonky). Once it’s on, pull each tab back one by one and adjust the diaper to fit.
The Key When You Change a Toddler’s Diaper
But, the most important part about changing a toddler is the diaper you use.
We’ve used Huggies for the last five years through two very active kids. I love that I can change my kids standing up, adjust the tabs, and the diaper doesn’t fall apart. In fact, my kids stay in these diapers all night long without a problem!
Plus, my kids love the designs(especially my son). For a long time, my son’s favorite thing to hold onto while I changed him was the new diaper. He loved looking for Mickey!
